What Is Allergic Reactions to Food?

A food allergy happens when the immune system responds to a food that is harmless as if it were a threat. First time when a person eats that food, there are no symptoms. However, when you eat the food again, there is an allergic response. Any allergic reactions to food, takes place after several hours of exposure to the allergen. There are many things that can affect the timing and location of the reaction like the eating time, food digestion, and finally the location of immune cells.

Allergic Reactions to Food

Food allergic reaction happens in two steps. They are:

Step 1: When you are exposed to the allergen, your immune system releases particular IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies to that allergen. IgE antibodies are circulated throughout the blood and get attached to different types of immune cells called the basophils and masy cells. The mast cells are found in all the body tissues, especially in your throat, nose, skin, lungs, and gastro-intestinal tract. Whereas the Basophils are found in the tissues and blood that are inflamed due to an allergic reaction.

Step 2: Exposure to the same food next time results in the binding of IgE antibodies, which are get attached to the basophils and mast cells. This binding signals the cells to release huge amounts of chemicals like the histamine. You will have food allergy symptoms depending upon the release of these chemicals on which ever tissue. The symptoms can range from severe to mild. However, a severe allergic reaction can cause life-threatening condition called the anaphylaxis.

If you have a family history of food allergy, then you are at a greater risk of developing this food allergy. Some of the common family allergies that pass on to the other generation are eczema and asthma. So, if you have a family history of any type of allergy then you need to be very cautious and take care of yourself.
