Effects of Marijuana

Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug used in the US. In fact, polls reveal high support for legalizing marijuana. It is also called by street names such as herb, weed and pot. There is also hash, which is concentrated marijuana. Government reports reveal that about 30% of American teenagers smoke marijuana. However they need to be aware of the many side effects of marijuana use. Though occasional weed use is usually harmless, addiction to this drug can be dangerous due to the following reasons:

Physical Effects of Marijuana
Pot contains the active ingredient THC which is responsible for various medical effects such as:

  • Slow down in reaction
  • Loss of coordination
  • Increased appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Increased breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure

The above effects may linger for up to 24 hours which means you may be impaired for a long time even after the “high” is gone.

Mental Effects of Marijuana
Most people try marijuana because of its euphoric effect, which is called getting “stoned”. Other effects are:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Short-term loss of memory
  • Problems with learning
  • Random thinking
  • Paranoia
  • Distorted perception (touch, time, sounds, sights)
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions

These side effects can last till the next day.

Risks of Marijuana Addiction
Heavy users are at risk of suffering the following conditions:

  • Higher risk of lung cancer
  • Lowers fertility, libido, testosterone levels, sperm quality and count
  • Addicts start feeling withdrawal symptoms, when they can’t get their fix

Testing for Marijuana
Light users need to wait a week before they can be sure that they will test negative for marijuana. But, “stoners” as heavy users are called, can continue to test positive for up to a month after their last smoke.

We hope the above effects of marijuana have made you aware and conscious about what exactly happens when you smoke pot. For all these reasons, marijuana is illegal in the US and many other countries. The health effects and the cost of obtaining weed are simply not worth it in the long run.
