Risks of Gym Workouts
Many people go to the gym to tone their body and improve their overall health. But, gym workouts carry certain risks of injury and infection. In this article, we look at a few common gym risks and advise you how to avoid them.
The gym trainer should be well trained themselves. Check whether he/she has the required qualifications. The National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise provide certification for gym instructors. The major risk of unqualified staff is they may goad you to overstretch yourself during exercise resulting in injury.
Your gym’s equipment may be used by hundreds of others. Naturally, this wear and tear can lead to equipment malfunction and breakdown while you are using it. To deal with this risk, keep an eye out for frayed cables and broken equipment. If a machine doesn’t seem to be working correctly, report this issue to the staff.
Choosing Incorrect Exercises
Do not choose difficult exercises just because they are effective for someone else. Don’t overstretch yourself trying to do impossible exercises just to get a sexy body. Be aware of your body’s limitations. If you have a special condition like a recent surgery, hypertension or a bad back, inform your trainer to enable them to modify your exercise program accordingly.
The Risk of Falls
Jogging, running and jumping in the gym can sometimes lead to trips and falls. To avoid this risk, keep an eye out for obstacles like stray equipment, bottles, weights etc. You need to be extra careful around hot tubs, pools and showers as these wet areas are more likely to cause slips and falls.
Strains and Sprains
Overstretching, poor technique, lifting too heavy a weight, stretching incorrectly etc can cause sprains and strains. Do not start a movement or exercise unless you are 100% sure of executing it correctly. Stop immediately if you feel pain or discomfort during an exercise. If you do injure yourself, apply ice and elevate the injured part to rest it. Call home and ask somebody to pick you up from the gym.
The Risk of Infections
Another common gym risk is infections. Swimming pool decks, showers and other wet areas are ideal places for viruses, bacteria and fungi to flourish. Infectious organisms also thrive on the sweat left behind on gym equipment. To minimize this risk, go to a gym where cleanliness is maintained. Wear flip-flops or shower shoes to minimize the risk of contracting bacterial or viral infections, toenail fungus or athlete’s foot. Wash your hands clean with water and soap, and wipe down before and after using any equipment.
