Aplastic Anemia Causes
Aplastic anemia is a condition which develops when the body stops producing required new blood cells. This condition makes you feel fatigued and increases the risk of infections and the bleeding cannot be controlled. This is a rare and serious health condition which can develop at any age. It can occur slowly or suddenly and can worsen over a period of time. The treatment for aplastic anemia can include stem cell transplantation, medications or blood transfusions. Medications and drugs: Some medications and drugs also cause aplastic anemia. This occurs due to the interaction with some other drugs or because of direct adverse effect on bone marrow. Those drugs include carbamazepine, felbamate, phenylbutazone, quinine, phenytoin, chloramphenicol, etc. Even though these and several other drugs cause aplastic anemia, the probability of these drugs causing this condition is low. For instance, only 1 in 40,000 people who use chloramphenicol develop aplastic anemia.
Poisoning and toxicity: This is one of the causes of aplastic anemia. If a person is exposed to toxic substances, he may suffer from aplastic anemia. These can include arsenic, pesticide components, benzene, etc.
Radiation and chemotherapy: Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the dangerous causes of aplastic anemia, particularly if they are administered for a long period. In fact, bones and blood are the first organs which get affected by radiation. The sudden onset of this condition is one of the symptoms of radiation poisoning.
Systemic diseases: A few diseases and disorders can adversely afflict the bone marrow. In acute cases of viral hepatitis, one may get contracted with this disease. Even other viral infections such as infections triggered by HIV, Epstein – Barr virus, parvovirus, cytomegalovirus, etc can trigger this condition. Some immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can cause aplastic anemia, like in the autoimmune disease white blood cells can attack bone marrow and prevent the production of red blood cells.
Bone marrow cancer: This is one of the main causes of aplastic anemia. Often, it is caused by radiation poisoning. The bone marrow cancer can severely afflict the bone marrow functioning, resulting in low production of red blood cells. Apart from radiation, this cancer can also be caused due to the metastasis of other cancer types.
Pregnancy: Aplastic anemia which develops during pregnancy can be associated to an autoimmune disease. The immune system may attack the bone marrow during this period.
Other disorders: Some other rare inherited diseases can also result in aplastic anemia such as Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, dyskeratosis congenital, Fanconi’s anemia, etc. In these cases, the treatment involved is blood transfusions. In severe cases, bone marrow transplantation is done.
Hence, these were several aplastic anemia causes. Initially some people said that this condition can run in families, hence, it can be hereditary in nature.
