How much is Too Much Sugar?
Almost all the people love to eat sweet foods. It is alright to eat them in normal amounts. However, too much sugar is bad for the body. Therefore, it must be eaten with a limit. But what is this limit? To find out, read the article below.
How Much Sugar Is Okay?
Sugar is a type of carbohydrate. One is recommended to take about half of their calories from carbohydrates on a daily basis. However, most of the sugary intake should consist of complex carbohydrates that can be derived from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and not from honey, table sugar, or fructose corn syrup.
It is not easy to cut back on added sugars completely. Fortunately, abandoning sweets completely is not necessary. One simply needs to choose sweet treats in a wise manner, and then eat them in small amounts. This way, the extra calories will remain within the limit of your daily calories.
Experts suggest that you free your diet from a few calories to accommodate the calories from your sweet food treats. This is known as daily discretionary calories. In general, for most people, the discretionary calorie limit is between 100 to 300 calories a day. This depends on how many calories you require to satisfy your nutritional requirements for minerals, vitamins, and fiber, on a daily basis.
To find out how many grams of sugar you can consume, while still staying within the limit, you can divide your discretionary calorie limit by the number of calories in a gram of sugar. If you consume 200 calories a day for sweet treats, then that means you are consuming about 50 grams of sugar. In most sweet treats, there is some amount of fat too, which also needs to be added in the calculations. Note that 1 gram of fat has 9 calories.
As the discretionary calorie budget is small, you can have only 1 can of soda, half of a candy bar, or a small-sized scoop of ice cream. Plus, you do not have separate allowance for other types of foods such as oil foods or alcohol. Thus, if you have a high-fat preparation for dinner, then you will probably use your discretionary calories because of the extra fat. This way, you will exceed the budget if you have a dessert.
Is Too Much Sugar Bad for Health?
Those who have a sweet-tooth, often eat cookies and candies every day. This adds a lot of fat to their bodies. Ultimately, such people gain weight over time. This is bad for their health. Thus, one must eat sweet foods with a limit.
