Infection Symptoms After Surgery

Usually post surgical care involves checking the response of the patient to the surgery and even checking the occurrence of the infection. However, sometimes infection may develop irrespective of the care one takes to prevent the infection. Generally, it happens in minor surgeries where the patient is permitted to go home immediately, i.e., within in a short period after the surgery. Most people get confused with this condition whether they are recovering from the condition or suffering from an infection. Hence, it is must for a person to keep a track of physical discomforts which a person experiences and consult the doctor for the same as early as possible. Early detection of infection helps in getting rid of great discomfort. Following are the infection symptoms after surgery.

Redness and swelling: It is normal to observe redness and swelling on the operated area. If the swelling does not subside but aggravates the condition, consult the health care provider immediately as it can be an indication of an infection.

Body aches and/or headaches: Body ache and/or headache are the most common infection symptom after surgery. It is common to experience discomfort and pain on the operated area. If you are having severe headaches and body aches after surgery, you must consult the medical practitioner because it can be a symptom of the infection.

Fever: Mild fever is common post surgery, but if temperature is as high as 101 degrees Celsius, then one must worry about it. Hence, it is must to keep a track of the body temperature as you can consult the doctor if you have mild fever. Along with fever, one may also experience malaise, headaches and body aches. Malaise may be present without fever.

Pus and drainage: Pus and drainage can be an alarming symptom of infection. If the incision site is infected because of any factor, pus forms in the area. One can observe thick greenish yellow liquid like substance oozing out from the site. Sometimes, one may also observe pus with blood tinge along with it. Speak to the health care provider if you are experiencing this to prevent further complications.

Hot incision: This is another symptom that one can observe post surgery. It is an indication of an infection and that your body is combating the infection.

Other signs and symptoms:

  • Breathing problems
  • Loss of appetite or unable to eat food properly
  • Problems in passing stool and/or urination
  • Vomiting with or without blood
  • Discoloration of urine and stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

The infection symptoms after surgery are based upon the surgery. One can also prevent an infection post surgery. You can prevent serious consequences by keeping a track of changes in your body.
