Lung Infection Treatment

Lung infection is a condition wherein there is an inflammation of the lungs. This is a most common condition. In fact, pneumonia is the correct synonym for this condition. Pneumonia leads to accumulation of pus and fluid in section of lungs. Also, patches may also form in lungs, leading to breathing obstruction. Lung Infection Symptoms:

There are several symptoms which develop due to lung infection. Following are some of the symptoms of lung infection:

  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Clammy and sweaty skin
  • Coughing of blood
  • Pain in chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • High fever with shivering chills
  • Yellowish or greenish phlegm

Lung Infection Treatment:

In most cases, people get well with the usage of antibiotics and other medicines, without consulting the physician. If there are complications, one may be hospitalized. The treatment is based on the underlying cause of infection.

Bacterial Lung Infection Treatment:

Mostly bacterial pneumonia is treated without hospitalization. If bacteria are the underlying cause of infection, antibiotics are prescribed first for the treatment. Antibiotics are prescribed based on the overall health, location of infection and age of the patient. Erythromycin and amoxicillin are typically prescribed for treating pneumonia. Conventionally, it must be given within 7 – 10 days. However, the recent researches have proved that the treatment is effective if given for 3 – 5 days. If pneumonia is developed due to hospital set up, the medications for this include third and fourth generations of vancomycin, aminoglycosides, fluroquinolones, carbapenems and cephalosporins. These medications are given intravenously.

Virus Lung Infection Treatment:

Viral lung infection cannot be treated with antibiotics. However, there is no particular treatment for many types of lung infection. Only influenza A and influenza B can be treated with medicines. Amantidine or rimantadine can be used for treating influenza A. Zanamivir or oseltamivir and so on can be used for treating both influenza A and influenza B. These are effective if given within 48 hours of the manifestation of the symptoms. This is the usual course of viral lung infection treatment.

Treatment for Aspiration Induced Lung Infection:

If pneumonia or lung disease is caused by aspiration – entrance of oral or gastric contents, then the antibiotics are prescribed based on some factors. These are suspected causative organisms and are the possible settings in which the infection was triggered. Infection might be either community acquired or hospital acquired. At this condition, common antibiotics such as aminoglycoside, clindamycin and metronidazole are prescribed. Apart from these, corticosteroids are also prescribed for treating lung infection.
