Kidney Pain Causes
Kidneys are in the shape of beans. These are the vital organs that are located in abdomen near middle of back. Their main function is maintaining homeostatic balance of fluids in the body. They play an important role in blood filtration and in eliminating harmful toxins from the body in urine form. These organs also aid in monitoring electrolyte concentrations such as potassium and sodium and in maintaining the balance of acid-base. Impaired renal functioning may result in several health problems. Kidney pain is the major symptom of several kidney diseases. It is caused by various health conditions like polycystic kidney disease, kidney cancer, kidney infections or kidney stones.
Kidney Pain Causes:
One experiences kidney pain in flank region of back. This type of pain is severe and sharp. It is felt in waves. Numerous health conditions that can cause kidney pain are discussed below.
Urinary Tract Infection: This is a common cause of kidney pain, particularly in women. Urinary tract infection is mainly caused by Gram Negative bacteria. Usually, it afflicts the bladder. However, it may spread to kidneys. If kidneys are infected, one may suffer from vomiting, chills, fever and abdominal pain. For treating this infection, doctors prescribe antibiotics.
Kidney Stones: This is the major risk factor for kidney pain. Kidney stones are formed because of the crystallization of urine into small and hard substances because of disturbed balance of minerals and fluids. They may block ureters and restrict urine flow. Because of this, urine isn’t excreted from kidneys, resulting in kidneys swelling. Kidney pain which is triggered by kidney stones is called colic (meaning pain is felt in waves). The pain begins in left or right flank and later spreads down. People suffering pain caused by kidney stone describe it as the most severe pain that they ever experienced. Nausea and vomiting are other symptoms. Kidney stones are treated with medicines or removed by surgical procedure. People are advised to drink plenty of fluids that help in removing stones. To get relief from the pain, non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs are given.
Kidney Infection: This is also called pyelonephritis. Kidney pain caused by infection is because of kidney tissues inflammation. The pain-sensitive capsule which surrounds kidney is stretched and results in swelling of kidneys, leading to kidney pain. This pain is sharp and intense. This also causes tenderness in the infected area. Other symptoms associated with this are high fever, nausea and vomiting. Antibiotics are prescribed by the doctors for curing infections and pain relievers are given for relieving the pain.
Blocked urine flow: Other than kidney stones, there are some health issues like enlarged prostate or chronic bilateral uropathy which cause blockage of urine flow. This leads to dull and aching pain. Treatment is given based on the cause of blockage.
Kidney Cancer: In rare cases of kidney cancer, tumor may grow and damage kidneys capsule resulting in dull, constant pain. For curing kidney cancer, tumor must be removed surgically.
Polycystic Kidney Disease: This is a genetic disorder which caused enlargement of kidneys because of cysts formation. This can cause dull, aching pain. This pain is experienced infront area of abdomen rather than back region. Kidney transplantation and kidney dialysis are needed for treating polycystic kidney disease.
Bleeding in kidneys because of kidney infarction or injury are some rare cases which cause kidney pain. Consult the doctor immediately, if you experience kidney pain.
