High Fever Symptoms

Generally, high temperature of the body is termed as fever. It is the response of the body to a disease or an infection. If the body temperature rises, it is an indication of some illness in the body. The fever may cause uncomfortable feeling in adults, but it is not dangerous until it reaches 39.4 C (103 F) or higher. For infants and young children, slight high temperature can indicate a serious infection.

But the body temperature does not necessarily indicate a seriousness of the health problem. A minor health problem can trigger high fever and a serious illness can trigger low fever. Generally, fever disappears in a few days. Several over the counter medicines reduce fever, but in some cases it is best to not to treat the condition. Fever plays a vital role in fighting numerous infections of the body.

High Fever Symptoms:
Following are high fever symptoms in adults:

  • Rapid pulse
  • Bizarre behavior
  • Dark yellow colored urine
  • Body ache
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Confused (decreased thinking capability)

Apart from increase in body temperature, following are some symptoms of high fever in children:

  • Fussy
  • Lethargy
  • Irritated
  • Do not talk much and will not move
  • Avoid eating food
  • Do not play
  • Changes in sleeping i.e., either sleep for a long period or do not sleep at all
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Children may feel extremely cold or extremely hot
  • Vomiting

Toddlers have a tendency to heat up after running around or excessive crawling. Hence, it’s imperative to know the signs of high fever in the toddlers. If the toddler can express verbally, he will complain about chills, body ache, headache, etc.

Treatment for High Fever:
It is always better to treat fever with home remedies than using medications as fever is an indication that something is wrong in the body. So, it is best to subside it with some precautions. Application of wet cloth on forehead is the best remedy for reducing body temperature. Ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen are prescribed for decreasing temperature in adults. These medicines must be taken for every 6 – 8 hours for reducing the body temperature. Drink plenty of water to combat high fever. This is the most effective method for high grade fever.
