McDonald’s to Include Apples in its Happy Meals
McDonald’s chain of fast-food restaurants has announced it will add apples to its Happy Meals for children and reduce the portion size of French fries. The chain has been criticized by consumer groups for providing unhealthy foods to children.
The changes will be effective from September and all its US restaurants will be covered in the first three months of 2012. By 2015, McDonald’s will reduce sodium content by 15%. Going further by 2020, it will cut calories, saturated fats, added sugars and sodium in all its domestic meals.
McDonald’s says it is mulling introducing more healthy foods like whole grains, vegetables and fruits. French fries for children will be cut from the current 2.4 ounces to 1.1 ounces, equal to around 100 calories. Its new apple size will be 1.2 ounces, and will have no dipping sauces or added sugar.
McDonald’s new Happy Meal will contain 20% less calories. In total, the meal will contain less than 600 calories. Prices will continue to be the same and children will continue to get free toys with the Happy Meal.
