Contaminated Alcohol Kills 23 in Ecuador
Emergency was imposed in Ecuador after contaminated alcohol killed 23 people last week. The state of emergency will continue for two months and authorities banned all alcohol sales for at least three days.
Most of the deaths occurred in Ricaurte town, where there were 21 victims. Health officials also seized illegal homemade liquor, which is believed to be the cause of the deaths.
The first death occurred last Thursday and the toll rose rapidly during the weekend. Cardiac arrest due to the tainted alcohol is the cause behind the deaths. Other people suffered kidney damage or became blind. More victims are expected in the near future.
The government crackdown on alcohol sales has diminished the numbers of new victims. The media has also highlighted the tragedy through information campaigns. But, more than 100 patients were treated after drinking tainted alcohol.
