Obesity Epidemic Haunts USA

A recent report on the obesity epidemic in the USA has thrown up some startling facts about how this recent development continues to haunt America. Obesity has become raging only of late.

Four years back, only one state had more than 30% obese adults. Today, 12 states are home to more than 30% obese adults.

Twenty years back, no state had obesity rates above 15%. Today, all the 50 states have more than 15% obese adults. Only in Colorado the obesity rate is below 20% at 19.8%.

Health experts say these recent dramatic changes in obesity levels are causing serious problems like hypertension and diabetes, which are increasing the costs of health care. Most of the obese states are in the South.

The effects of obesity can be gauged from the fact that in eight states more than 10% of the adult population suffers from diabetes.

Obesity Highlights:

  • 14 states reported an increase in the percentage of adults who shun regular exercise.
  • Among men, obesity has increased in nine states.
  • Obesity most affects the poor and least educated. College graduates have the lowest obesity rates.
  • More than 33% of adolescents and children are overweight or obese.
