European E.coli Toll Rises to 44
The death toll in the deadly European E.coli outbreak has risen to 44, with 43 deaths in Germany. The other person died in Sweden.
There was another death in the US, and the person had traveled to Germany. But, it is not certain he was killed by the same strain of bacteria that is ravaging Germany.
However, the outbreak is losing its rage and new infections have dropped sharply in the last two weeks. A total of 3,717 patients have been sickened in Germany. Out of these, 827 people suffer a serious complication which can even cause kidney failure.
Fifteen other European countries have reported an additional 119 victims. The culprit bacteria were traced back to a German sprout firm. But, health officials are still in the dark about how the contamination occurred.
