Portable Pools Risky for Young Kids
Health experts warn that portable swimming pools are risky for young children. A recent study at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the city of Columbus, Ohio, analyzed the deaths of greater than 200 kids who drowned in portable pools.
The researchers reveal these drowning deaths are becoming common. These pools are becoming popular because they are cheap and easy to set up. But, they pose grave risks for kids, especially those below five years. This alarming report was recently published in the online edition of the journal Pediatrics.
The study analyzed more than 200 drowning and near drowning cases of children below 12 years. 94% of the drowned kids were below five years. 56% were boys. 75% of the deaths occurred in the kids’ yards.
Supervision also had little effect. Greater than 40% of the deaths occurred under supervision and 39% when there was no supervision. 18% of the drownings were due to a lapse on the part of the supervisor.
The researchers warn parents these portable pools are dangerous and that active supervision is required when young
children use these pools.
