Olive Oil Consumed Regularly May Prevent Stroke!

Extra Virgin Olive OilA new study conducted by a team of researchers headed by the lead author Cecilia Samieri from the University of Bordeaux, France, has revealed that consumption of olive oil on a regular basis may prevent stroke in elderly people who are aged 65 and above.

The study involved the examination of medical records of 7625 people from Dijon, Bordeaux and Montpellier, the 3 cities of France. All these people were aged 65 and above and did not have past history of stroke.

Based on the consumption of olive oil, they were categorized as ‘no consumption’, ‘moderate consumption’ (used in cooking or with bread or as dressing) and ‘intensive consumption’ (used in both cooking and as dressing) groups. Extra virgin olive oil was used by them.

After about 5 years, 148 strokes occurred among these people.

It was observed that people who were in the ‘intensive consumption’ category were at a 41% low risk of developing stroke compared to the other 2 groups.

Other factors such as body mass index, diet, physical activity and some other risk factors of stroke were also taken into consideration.
