Indian Spice Curcumin Found Effective In Treating Head & Neck Cancers!
One of the main difficulties in treating cancers of head and neck region lies in the fact that these tumors gain resistance to chemotherapy drugs very quickly.
A new study conducted by a group of researchers from the Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre, University of Michigan has revealed that a compound (FLLL32) found in the common Indian spice, Curcumin (turmeric) can effectively kill the tumor cells when it is added to the powerful chemotherapy drug, cisplatin.
According to Thomas Carey, the senior author of the study, once the cancer cells become resistant to the drug, the dosage of it is increased which in the long run can have toxic side effects on the patient’s body. This new finding enables to reduce the dosage of the drug but still reap all the benefits of it.
Almost 82% of head and neck cancers show high levels of a protein known as STAT3. The compound found in curcumin has the ability to inhibit the function of this protein.
