Protein Pills To Activate Heart Stem Cells During Heart Attack – A New Stem Cell Breakthrough!
People who have a family history of heart attack or who are at a higher risk of getting a heart attack due to other health complications can now take a protein pill and prevent heart attack.
A recent study conducted by a team of researchers led by Professor Paul Riley from the University College London (UCL), discovered that epicardium, the layer that surrounds the heart is an abundant source of dormant stem cells that could be activated by a peptide named thymosin beta-4 produced naturally in the body. Once these stem cells are activated they can repair the damaged heart tissue instantly.
The study was conducted on laboratory mice. The group of mice that were given thymosin beta-4 injections on a daily basis for a week before the attack had greater chances of survival. Within a day after the attack, their stem cells became active and started regrowing the damaged heart tissue.
In the near future, this single protein pill may save thousands of people who are at a higher risk of heart attack.
