How to Cope with Death?

Death is almost synonymous with pain or its more concentrated version grief. The death of a loved one can leave you both empty and dejected that you may never recover from this situation. While there is no specific way to deal with the pain associated with this loss, this article offers you a few tips on how to cope with death.

One should know the stages of grief and be ready and prepared to go through them when the time comes i.e. denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance as detailed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in 1969.

Understand that there is no specific time for you to grieve and that your pain may last anything from weeks to years. And though the pain may eventually reduce, it may never be possible for you to feel nice emotions when that person is featured.

The best tip on how to cope with death is to make certain to get and maintain support and do not isolate yourself. Keep yourself around people who understand and like you in the first place otherwise you may become depressed. A support system will keep you comforted and ensure that your spirits are uplifted eventually.

Take special care of yourself in this time as this will get you back to your normal routine. Do not deny your feelings and prepare for stuff that will spark off your grief such as anniversaries or birthdays. Do not neglect to feed yourself and take care of your body after all when it is all over you have to use it still.

Try not to get mad at people who come to offer you comfort. The truth of the matter is no matter how much someone loves you, it is impossible for them to feel your pain and therefore they will not know what to tell you so as to alleviate some of it instead what will come out of their mouths will simply irritate you.

Do not be afraid to ask for help, cry or even scream. You are in pain and should be allowed to express it as such. Suppressed pain will later turn into something else such as depression, so let it out. You do not have to put on a brave front for anyone, express it as you feel it.

This is the best time to reflect upon your own death and make sure that everything is in order. The pain of losing someone is enough without them having to put your affairs in order as well after you are gone; this only prolongs their grief so as you grieve, think about your own sure end.

On how to cope with death, always remember to address every emotion straight on and do not live in denial . Be straight forward and realistic on what is happening and do not bury it. There is no specific formula on how to survive during these trying days and no one should tell you that this is how it should be done. We are all unique, go through the process your own way.
