Americans Ignore Cellphone Cancer Fears
Last week the World Health Organization raised concern that cellphone use could cause brain cancer. But, Americans have mostly greeted this news with disregard. While some say they will start using headsets, many Americans say the warning is too vague.
On average, Americans talk for around 700 minutes every month on cellphones. This average time is much more than that of Europeans. Many Americans say there is no other alternative to cellphones. Some have vowed to use speakerphones more, so that the handset itself is not close to the head.
The WHO warning had placed cellphones in the same category of “possible carcinogens” as night shift work, coffee and engine exhaust. Since many “possible carcinogens” are almost indispensable, Americans seem to have added cellphones also to this list of indispensable “carcinogens”.
