Lettuce, Spinach and Other Leafy Greens Can Combat Heart Disorders Caused By Doxorubicin, A Powerful Anti-Cancer Drug!
A team of researchers led by Dr. Rakesh C. Kukreja from Virginia Commonwealth University have discovered a simple and inexpensive way of combating the ill-effects of the usage of a very powerful anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin.
Doctors have been prescribing this drug as the first choice for chemotherapy since 1960s in spite of its ability to cause heart dysfunction because of its high level of efficacy in fighting cancer.
In the current study, the team has used a mouse model which was given inorganic nitrate in the diet. It was observed that the heart dysfunction which was a result of the usage of doxorubicin decreased considerably.
Cancer patients using this drug can now relax as the heart dysfunction caused by it can be reduced. Regular intake of inorganic nitrate rich foods such as beet root juice, spinach, lettuce and other green leafy vegetables have high levels of inorganic nitrate that protects the heart against free radical damage.
