Alcohol Abuse And Psychiatric Disorders May Be Treated With Fish Oil!
A study conducted by a team of researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine has revealed the therapeutic benefits of omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil in treating ‘alcohol craving’ and bipolar disorder.
The study involved mice modeled with bipolar disorder. These mice were given the omega 3 fatty acids, which contain DHA fatty acid as the main ingredient. After the intake of these, the behavior of the mice was normalized according to Alexander B. Niculescu, the lead author of this study.
The symptoms in these modeled mice included the typical symptoms of bipolar disorder such as becoming maniac under stress and depression.
The mice brains were evaluated using gene expression studies and it was found that the genes that react to psychiatric drugs were controlled and normalized by the fatty acid, DHA.
Patients with bipolar disorder crave alcohol. Similar behavior was observed in these mice. But, when they were given DHA, their alcohol consumption decreased.
