Bearing Twins May Extend Mom’s Life
A new research study suggests that bearing twins may actually extend the mother’s life. This could be because mothers of twins are stronger physically to start with. This study was recently published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B journal.
The research analyzed mothers who gave birth to twins in the 1800s in the state of Utah in the US. The researchers at the University of Utah had thought that having twins would be a burdensome experience for the mothers. But, they ended up with the surprise finding that these women are physically exceptional.
In the US, twins accounts for 20 births out of every 1,000 deliveries. In the Utah study, researchers found that mothers of twins lived longer, recovered more quickly between pregnancies, and produced more children, compared to mothers of single babies. The researchers say these supermoms should be studied to analyze the secrets behind their longer, healthier and more productive lives.
A previous study in 2001 in rural Gambia had revealed that moms of twins enjoyed better reproductive health compared to mothers of singletons.
