Mass Circumcision in Philippine City
The city of Marikina in the Philippines recently conducted a mass “circumcision party” free of cost for hundreds of children. Circumcision is common among preteen males in the Philippines.
The mass circumcision exercise was conducted at a sports venue. The event was organized to promote the safe practice of circumcision. Poor residents availed of this free surgery, which would have cost about $40 at private hospitals.
By mid-afternoon, about 1,500 boys had undergone circumcision. Filipino boys traditionally undergo circumcision in the summer break from school. In rural regions, this surgery can be dangerous as sometimes non-doctors perform it using unsafe methods.
Marikina has applied to the Guinness Book of World Records to recognize this feat of mass circumcision. This city is regarded as the shoemaking capital of the Philippines.
