Temsirolimus – “Wonder Drug” for Mesothelioma Treatment?

A study that was published in the May issue of the ‘Journal of Thoracic Oncology’, found that a drug that was commonly used for treatment of kidney cancer may be effective for the treatment of Mesothelioma too. This research was supported by the ‘Medical Scientific Fund’ of the Mayor of the City of Vienna along with “Initiative Krebsforschung” of the Medical University Vienna, and a Wyeth/Pfizer research grant.

As per the study, the drug Temsirolimus, is a kinase inhibitor that blocks the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) from acting. It is used in treating renal cell carcinoma in its advanced stages. Now researchers in Austria have found that Temsirolimus can also be used to inhibit the growth of malignant pleural Mesothelioma cells.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused due to the exposure to asbestos. As per the findings, Temsirolimus was able to block mTOR signals and also showed growth-stopping effects on all the Mesothelioma cells.
