Can Major Depression Cause Genetic Risk?
According to a recent research, scientists have discovered that a new type of gene is linked to major depression. This research that was published in the April issue of the journal ‘Neuron’ tells that the mechanism for major depression was previously unfound. And now this may help in getting therapeutic support for this mood disorder.
Major depression is a disorder that can result in a significant loss in the productivity of work and it can also result in suicide in some cases. Dr. Kohli and his team members conducted a genome-wide study on patients who were diagnosed with major depression.
He then matched the subjects with no history of this psychiatric illness. The result found was that SLC6A15 was the gene that is responsible for coding neuronal amino acid transporter protein and it was a novel susceptibility gene for major depression. This research was expanded and conducted on 15,000 individuals and was confirmed.
