Popularity of Hookah Smoking Worries Researchers
Though cigarette smoking is losing popularity among young Americans, it is fast being replaced by another bad habit: hookah smoking. This growing trend is becoming worrisome say researchers of a study conducted by the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina.
The researchers say hookah smoking may become a gateway to using other tobacco products. Many youngsters wrongly think that hookah smoking is safer than cigarettes. The study surveyed 3,770 students at universities and colleges in North Carolina.
The study found that 40% of the students had done hookah smoking, while 47% had smoked cigarettes. 22% of the respondents confessed to only hookah smoking and avoided cigarettes. Hookah smoking is dangerous because the smoke is inhaled deeply and contains toxic compounds such as carcinogens, heavy metals, carbon monoxide and tar.
It is not surprising that hookah bars are becoming popular in college towns. These hookah bars are not covered by anti-smoking laws that cover most restaurants and bars.
