High-Protein Diet Might be Bad for the Colon: Study
According to a study, low carb, high-protein diet might prove harmful for the colon in the long run. Dr. Harry J. Flint, senior researcher from the University of Aberdeen, states that the study raises a possibility of colorectal cancer if one sticks to high-protein, low-carb and low fiber diet for a long time. The research is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
17 obese men were observed in the study. They all were asked to follow three short term diets. At the end of each diet, the participants’ fecal matter was analysed to find out the levels of some metabolic byproducts. It was found that men who had high-protein diet had higher levels of N-nitroso compounds and some other substance which is linked to cancer.
High-protein and low-carb diets are being embraced by people to lose weight. Flint feels this is a good way of fighting obesity. However, people should follow a diet which includes sufficient fiber content. They should also be aware of the fact that high-fiber diet might not be good for the colon.
