Fat Extracted from Liposuction is a Great Source of Stem Cells!
People planning to opt for liposuction to get rid of the extra fat in their bodies can now ‘store’ the fat and use it for breast reconstruction and many other fat grafting surgeries, according to Dr. Jeffrey Hartog of Central Florida.
Fat tissue, from which the stem cells are derived, is a very rich source of these cells also known as Adipose Derived Regenerative Cells (ADRC). They are easy to collect and come with a ‘no ethical issue’ label.
Also, the chances of tissue rejection are ruled out, as the grafts are developed from patient’s own cells.
ADRC therapy is yet to receive an approval from FDA in the USA.
Whereas in Europe, it has been approved and researchers have observed promising results in treating wounds caused due to radiation and other stubborn wounds. They also see these stem cells as potential raw materials for cardiac related treatments.
