Acupuncture Might Reduce the Severity of Hot Flushes
According to a study published in Acupuncture in Medicine, traditional acupuncture might reduce the severity of the menopausal symptoms including hot flashes. The effects might not be the result of the changes in the hormonal levels which are responsible for the menopause or its symptoms.
53 postmenopausal women were observed in the study. Their menopausal symptoms like hot flushes, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infection, mood swings etc., were measured. 27 women received the Chinese acupuncture for 10 weeks, the rest got sham acupuncture. It was noticed that the women who got acupuncture experienced decline in symptoms like hot flushes and mood swings than those who got sham treatment. The menopausal symptom which saw the sharpest fall was hot flushes.
Researchers feel that this decline in hot flushes due to acupuncture might be because of the boosting of the endorphin production which might stabilize the temperature of the body. Further studies on these grounds is required. However, acupuncture might be one of the options available for women to decrease the severity of the menopausal symptoms.
