Asthma Inhalers for Children – Good or Bad?

Recent studies have shown that corticosteroids found in the preventative asthma inhalers may actually interfere with children’s normal growth. In addition, some findings have also suggested that asthma can be treated without using the inhalers everyday.

Even when the daily use of inhalers is not mandatory, experts believe that using inhalers on a day-to-day basis would be the most effective treatment for asthma in children. But, parents should always talk to doctors in case they have any questions, and doubts regarding the daily use of inhaler.

There are many types of inhalers. While ‘Reliever‘ inhalers are used to treat asthma immediately, ‘Preventer‘ inhalers are used in anticipation, when asthma symptoms begin to show.

Asthma is a respiratory condition, often a result of coming in contact with irritants, resulting in the inflammation of airways leaving the patient short of breath.

Medication for asthma treatment should never be stopped when symptoms subside. It’s always better to see a doctor before starting or stopping the medication.

Experts believe that small doses of corticosteroids in inhalers don’t impact children’s natural growth negatively, making inhalers the best available treatment for asthma.
