Coffee is not generally considered a health drink, but researches reveal that it can benefit one’s health. These researches say coffee can reduce the risk of many serious diseases such as liver cirrhosis, heart disease and diabetes.

Coffee Has Antioxidants
The Journal of the American Medical Association reviewed studies which found that regular coffee drinking reduced the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes. This could be because coffee hosts antioxidants which can control cell damage, a factor that leads to Type 2 diabetes. Coffee also has chlorogenic acid, which can lower glucose concentrations. Even decaffeinated coffee was found to have the same effect.

Antioxidants are Beneficial

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that antioxidants present in coffee lower inflammation, which reduces the risk of related disorders such as cardiovascular disease. The compounds in coffee with antioxidant properties include oxazoles, volatile aroma compounds and phenols. In fact, coffee has more antioxidants compared to oranges, raspberries, blueberries and grape juice. The researchers revealed that coffee was a major source of antioxidants compared to other foods in the diets of U.S. and Norway citizens.

Coffee Reduces Diabetes Risk
Contrary to widespread belief, drinking lots of coffee can be beneficial. Researchers report that people who consumed more than six cups of coffee per day reduced their risk of contracting diabetes by 35%.

More Coffee Benefits
Another study among women by Norwegian researchers revealed that those who drank up to three cups of coffee each day lowered their risk of getting cardiovascular disease by about 24%, compared to non-drinkers. Women who drank up to five cups of coffee each day lowered their risk of dying from any cause by 15% to 19%, compared to non-drinkers. Coffee’s anti-inflammatory properties lower the risk of liver cancer and alcohol-linked cirrhosis. This has been confirmed by The Archives of Internal Medicine.

A Word of Caution

But, some health experts say caffeine in coffee can harm the drinker’s health. A research study has revealed that caffeine can lower blood supply to the heart. Caffeine can also raise blood pressure and the levels of an amino acid called homocysteine, which can increase the risk of getting heart disease.

However, coffee drinkers need not lose heart. Most research evidence suggests that coffee does not harm one’s health. But, it is not advisable to increase coffee consumption to lower the risk of disease. So, if you regularly enjoy a hot cuppa coffee every day, be glad that this habit does not affect your health.
