Central Heating Can Make You Fat
Americans crank up their thermostat during winter. Some scientists say this can make you fat. So, keep the thermostat low to shed some pounds. How can this happen? When we are cold, our body shivers to generate heat. This process burns extra calories.
British researchers have found that high indoor temperatures contribute to obesity. The researchers say after the 1960s, when central heating came into vogue, room temperatures have risen in Britain and the U.S. In the same time period, obesity has also increased.
There is also a change in heating patterns. Nowadays, residents heat the whole house. Previously, they used to heat only the main living areas. Cars are also heated and people walk less. Children also spend less time in playing outdoor sports. This lack of exercise and overeating are some of the main reasons for the obesity epidemic.
