Surgeon General Promotes Breastfeeding
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, Americans have to be more supportive of breastfeeding. On thursday, at a press brief along with breastfeeding advocates, Dr. Regina Benjamin revealed her plans for “Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding.” this cause includes more cultural nursing support at home and at work. Even this support is extended to the community.
Dr. Benjamin said that “one of the best preventive measures which a mother can take to protect both her child and her own health is to implement the practice of breastfeeding.” It is proven fact that mother’s milk minimizes asthma, pneumonia, ear infections and diarrhea.
Also, it protects the baby against obesity. On the other hand, breastfeeding helps to reduce the risk of ovarian and breast cancer in mothers. Even though 75% of women begin with breastfeeding, only 43% still breastfeed till six months. This statistics are according to the latest national data.
