New Year Resolutions – Do They Really Work?

This is the perfect time to look back into the past and make plans for your future as we have entered the new year – 2011. In order to prioritize our lives to be successful and content in the coming years, many among us tend to make lofty plans. These are better known as New Year Resolutions. A few such promises are kept, but most resolutions usually fail. We lack the will power to make the New Year’s resolutions to last longer than a week. According to the health campaigners ‘Change4Life’, the good intentions to eat healthier food, stop drinking alcohol or quit smoking will be more effective if individuals get support to meet their goals.

The “Resolution” Study
The team of researchers from the University of Hertfordshire followed 2,000 people who thought about a two-week resolution. They discovered that those individuals who solely relied on their will power failed to keep the promises even before the half-way stage. This study was led by psychologist Dr. Richard Wiseman, a professor at the University. His team monitored the progress of the participants who made healthy changes in their behavior.

The surprising result was that just 26% people who solely relied on their willpower actually managed to keep their goal intact throughout the study. Although, 35% of the participants who tried some other techniques had a better success rate.

The Result
The study revealed another mind boggling fact – women were less resilient at sticking to their resolutions, as only 30% were successful in keeping their promises compared to the 37% of men who took part in the study. Also, individuals who informed their family and friends about their initiative were far more successful in achieving their goals.

The research discovered one of the key elements of success – other techniques for achieving the goals successfully. These include imagining or visualizing a better life once the resolution is achieved. According to Professor Wiseman, most of the times the New Year’s resolutions fail as people strive to do too much too soon. Also, they don’t ask for right support to help them in their endeavor.
