Symptoms of myasthenia gravis are diagnosed in 200-400 people per million making it one of the rare diseases in autoimmune category. In the United States, 20 people per 100,000 are diagnosed with the signs of this disease.

It affects the muscles and makes the patient experience fatigue and varying levels of muscle weaknesses. Women below the age of 50 years and people belonging to the age group 50-70 years of both the genders get this disease.

The cause of the disease is not known owing to its autoimmune nature. Awareness of the signs is imperative as there is no cure and treatment mostly involves keeping the signs under check.

  • As the symptoms of this ailment are similar to other neurological disorders, diagnosis is difficult.
  • Symptoms are found to improve in second and third trimesters of pregnancy in women. In some cases, complete remission is also reported.
  • In 10 percent newly born babies, the disease is found to get transmitted from the parents leading to feeding and respiratory diseases in them.
  • Thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis are some of the associated complications with this disease.
  • Fortunately the disease is not progressive by nature. The symptoms come and do not get worse as the patient ages.
  • In some people the symptoms are found to decreases after a period of 3-5 years.
  • Being women belonging to the age group of 20-40 years, suffering from other autoimmune diseases, genetic inheritance and the possibility of getting this disease though drugs are some of the risk factors of this disease.
