Symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis

Primary biliary cirrhosis is an auto-immune disorder affecting the liver. It targets the organ’s bile ducts which produce bile juices helpful in the process of digestion.

Women in general and especially above the age of 50 years are nine times at the risk of developing the symptoms of primary biliary cirrhosis.

The cause of the disease is not known and there is no cure for it. Though liver transplant is one of the effective treatment options, there is no clear consensus on the risk factors which can lead a come back of the disease after the transplantation.

Symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis:

  • Itchy skin
  • Yellow eyes
  • Yellow skin
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Jaundice
  • Deposits of cholesterol in the skin
  • Accumulation of fluids in the organs
  • Dry mouth
  • Pale stool
  • Dry eyes
  • Enlarged liver
  • Scarring of liver
  • Increased pigmentation of the skin
  • Damage of the liver
  • Malabsorption
  • Muscle wasting
  • Red palms
  • Rise of the cholesterol level in the blood
  • Osteoporosis – Disease which increases the risk of bone fracture
  • Excoriated skin
  • Abnormal fluid buildup in abdomen
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Spider angiomas – A skin condition involving formation of painless lesions
  • Edema – Swelling caused by fluid accumulation in the body’s tissues
  • Osteomalacia – Softening of the bones caused by defective mineralization of the bones
  • Splenomegaly – Enlargement of the organ spleen
  • Sicca syndrome – An eye condition involving less production of tears and swelling of the cornea
  • Xanthelasmata – Yellowish collection of cholesterol underneath the skin especially around the eyes
  • Kayser-Fleischer rings – Dark rings encirciling the iris of the eye

Diagnosis of the Symptoms of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis:

Signs of this condition should be clearly separated from similar liver consitions like primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) or autoimmune hepatitis. Blood tests, ultrasound of the abdomen, CT scan and liver biopsy are some of the diagnostic methods used to find the above mentioned signs of this ailment.
