China and India – Emerging Hot Spots for Plastic Surgery

The word “Plastic Surgery” might bring to mind images of celebrities with enhanced looks, chiseled nose jobs and an all new bust line. The initial purpose of plastic surgery was to give people a new look if their face or body was disfigured due to burns, accidents or injuries. But advancements in this field coupled with people’s interest to enhance their looks took it to a whole new level.

Plastic surgery is getting popular in countries with rising economies and China and India top the list among these countries. These statistics were given by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) which took in to account the total number of surgeries (inclusive of surgical and non-surgical procedures) that the plastic surgeons in 25 countries have performed.

This trend of spending money on surgical procedures which was hitherto moderate in countries like China and India is due to the fact that as the economies are improving and generating wealth, people are willing to spend their money on surgeries to improve their looks and aesthetics. Statistics of the procedures done in the top 4 countries are as follows:

  • United States – 17.5%
  • Brazil – 14.3%
  • China – 12.7%
  • India – 5.2%
