Babies failure to thrive is a condition that can happen to any baby after birth and up to 12 months or older. This is a condition where the baby does not get enough to eat and fails to grow at the required rate. In some cases, a baby suffering from respiratory illness can also result in failure to thrive.


Infants that fail to thrive are smaller and shorter than the normal children of the same age. The teenagers may not have the normal changes that occur in puberty and are short stature. There is a lot of difference in normal growth and the development of the child. The rate of change in weight and height is very much important. There are many causes for babies failing to thrive. They include:

  • Defects in major organ system
  • Problems with the endocrine system
  • Damage to the central nervous system
  • Chromosomal abnormalities like turner syndrome and downs syndrome
  • Problems of the heart and lung
  • Long-term infections
  • Economic problems that can affect nutrition, living conditions and parental attitudes
  • Withdrawal
  • Complications during pregnancy
  • Low birth weight
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Anemia and other blood disorders
  • Gastrointestinal problems that can lead to malabsorption or decrease in digestive enzymes
  • Exposure to infections, toxins and parasites
  • Poor eating habits like eating in front of the television


The signs and symptoms include:

  • The height and weight do not match the normal growth charts
  • The head circumference also does not match with the standard growth chart
  • Growing is stopped and slowed sometimes
  • Delayed physical skills like sitting, rolling over, standing and walking
  • Delayed social and mental skills
  • Delay in the development of the secondary sexual characteristics

When to consult your doctor

If your child does not seem to be developing normally, then consult your doctor immediately without any delay. Take an appointment discuss with your doctor regarding the health of your baby. This can prevent the worsening of the condition.
