Binge-eating disorder is a serious and severe eating disorder where a person consumes huge amounts of food and overeats on every occasion, like having seconds or thirds of every holiday meal. These sometimes become a regular habit, shrouded in secrecy. Many of the people feel embarrassed about gorging such large quantity of food and vow to stop, but it becomes such a compulsive thing that a person cannot resist the urge to eat and continues binge eating.

Causes
The exact cause is not known and many factors play a role in binge-eating. They include:

  • Biological Factors: Some people may have an inherited gene that makes them more prone to developing this disorder. The brain chemicals may be altered in people with binge-eating disorder.
  • Psychological Factors: Psychological and emotional factors can also play a major role in this eating disorder and a person may suffer from low self-esteem and can have problem in controlling impulsive behaviors like expressing anger or managing moods.
  • Environmental Factors: The present culture often cultivates a habit of thinness, but most of them suffering from this disorder are overweight and they are very much aware of their appearance and can get angry after episodes of binges.

Symptoms
A person may suffer from numerous behavioral and emotional signs and symptoms. They include:

  • Feeling awful, depressed or upset about your eating
  • Frequently eating alone
  • Frequent dieting
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating lot even though the person is not hungry
  • Feeling that the persons eating behaviour is not in control
  • Eating hastily during binge episodes
  • Eating food even when they are full
  • Eating large amounts of food
  • After eating a person may try to eat normal meals or diet
  • A person may be of normal weight or over weight

Risk Factors
There are many factors that can increase the risk of developing this disorder. They include:

  • Sex: Women are more susceptible to develop this disorder.
  • Age: This disorder occurs in any age and it is seen commonly in people who are in their late adolescence or their early 20’s.
  • Family History: If any of the relatives, parents or siblings has had an this disorder, then a person may have an increased risk of suffering from this disorder.
  • Dieting: People suffering from this eating disorder have a history of dieting. Dieting may trigger an urge to binge eat.
  • Psychological Problems: Behavioral and emotional problems may cause binge-eating disorder. They may also have a past history of depression or substance abuse and they may have problems coping with stressful situations, sadness, worry, anger and boredom.

When to see a Doctor
If you suffer from any of the above symptoms, then seek medical help as soon as possible. Binge-eating disorder does not get better, but may get worse if left untreated.
