Bad Breath – Causes and Symptoms of Bad Breath
Bad breath also called halitosis can cause embarrassment, psychological and social barriers and can affect marriages. Some of the people are not even aware that they suffer from this problem. This is mainly originated in the mouth and starts from the back of the mouth. This is mainly caused by eating certain foods, tobacco products, dry mouth or any medical disorder. The treatment mainly depends on the cause and severity of bad breath.
Causes of Bad Breath
There are many causes for bad breath. They include:
Diet: When a person does not floss or brush their teeth properly, the food particles remain in the mouth and these can cause foul odors. Food particles can also cause to tooth decay and gum disease.
Foods like onions, garlic and certain spicy foods can cause a foul smelling breath. People who diet are also develop this disorder of the mouth due to infrequent eating.
Poor oral Health Care: When a person has no proper hygiene and does not brush his teeth regularly, the food in the mouth remains in between the teeth causes the bacteria to multiply which produces toxic wastes that results in bad breath. These bacteria release certain chemicals which damages the gums and teeth decay takes place.
Improper cleaning of Dentures: When the artificial dentures are not cleansed properly, the bacterial growth takes place, leading to bad breath.
Periodontal Disease: If a person suffers from periodontal disease,then the symptoms include foul smelling breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Dry Mouth: This is a condition where the saliva secretion decreases which helps in the cleansing the mouth and also removes particles that can cause odor. If a person suffers from dry mouth, then he/she may suffer from bad breath.
Tobacco Products: Tobacco products like cigars, smokeless tobacco or cigarettes can stain the teeth and cause bad breath. These products irritates the gum tissue and there are chances of developing oral cancer.
Medical Condition: Bad breath can be a symptom of any of the following conditions. Many of the conditions that cause foul smell includes:
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Liver or kidney disorders
- Respiratory disorders like Infection of the nose,lungs or wind pipe
- Chronic bronchitis or sinusitis
- Post nasal drip
- Severe dieting which makes the the dieters develop unpleasant fruity breath
Gastrointestinal problems: Diseases like gastritis and food reflux also cause bad breath.
The signs and symptoms of bad breath include:
- Sour or Metallic taste in the mouth
- Post nasal drainage
- A thick or thin film on tongue
- Dry mouth and tongue
- White nodules on the tonsillitis
- Sores in the mouth
- A bitter taste in the mouth always
- People around you offer mints or chewing gums
- People avoid direct contact with you and they step back when you start speaking
- A loss of self confidence and self esteem
