Hydatidiform Mole – Causes and Symptoms of Hydatidiform Mole

Hydatidiform mole is a medical condition related to pregnancy. It is a condition in which a rare cell growth occurs in the uterus as a substitute for foetus in the beginning of pregnancy. It can arise either from a placental tissue overgrowth or a growth of irregular fertilized egg. It can be fatal and may lead to cancerous growth. It is estimated that women aged between 20 to 40 years are more prone to this condition especially in Asiatic continent.

Causes of Hydatidiform Mole
Hydatidiform mole is formed as a result of excess production of tissue that is supposed to develop into placenta. The placenta hence provides the nutrients to the growing fetus. But in this condition, excess tissue develops into abnormal growth called as mass.

Hydatidiform mole is of two types. These two types occur due to problem in fertilization. They are:

  • Complete Hydatidiform mole – In this only abnormal growth present but there is no fetus.
  • Partial Hydatidiform mole – In this type, abnormal growth as well as fetal development occurs.

The factors that cause Hydatidiform mole include:

  • Problems in uterus
  • Defects in egg
  • Intake of diet that is low in vitamin A, animal fat and protein
  • Women who are pregnant under the age 16 or above the age 40 are at higher risk
  • A hydatidiform mole in the prior pregnancy

Symptoms of Hydatidiform Mole
Hydatidiform mole seems like a normal pregnancy but it causes a wide range of specific symptoms. They include:

  • Vaginal bleeding during the first trimester
  • Grape-like cysts in the vaginal passage
  • Severe vomiting and nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Uncontrollable growth of uterus (womb)
  • Ovarian cyst formation
