Cold and Flu – Causes and Symptoms of Cold Flu
Cold and flu are contagious infection of the nose, throat and lungs which is caused by influenza virus. These are caused by a number of viruses and flu is caused by the influenza virus. The virus enters your body through the nose or mouth and spreads when you touch someone or any of the objects like computer keyboard, telephone receiver, door knob or utensils used for eating. The viral infection results in fever, cough and headache. There are some flu outbreaks that occur when the human population is exposed to a flu strain. In 2009, a new influenza strain that spread throughout the world called the H1N1 influenza virus or the swine flu.
Both cold and flu are caused by viruses and the actual difference between them is the type of virus that cause the illness. Cold is caused mainly by the rhino viruses and flu is caused by the influenza virus, but it is very contagious. The different modes of spreading this infection include:
- The virus enters your body through the mouth or nose.
- The virus can also spread through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- It also spreads by hand to hand contact when you share objects like toys, towels or telephones.
- When a person gets in contact with an infected person, then if he/she touches the eyes or nose or mouth after such a contact, then you may catch a cold and flu.
Symptoms of cold and flu appear in one to three days after exposure.The signs and symptoms of Cold and Flu include:
- Mild fatigue
- Watery eyes
- Slight body aches
- Mild headache
- Itchy or Sore throat
- Runny or Stuffy nose
- Flushed face
- Nausea and vomiting
When to consult your doctor?
Most of the people recover completely in one to two weeks, but some people develop serious and life-threatening medical complications, like pneumonia. When you find the above signs and symptoms, consult your doctor immediately before any complications rise. Swine flu is a classic example of a flu which was very dreadful flu that took the lives of many people throughout the world.
