Bleeding Cuts and wounds can be caused by an injury or bites which results in a break in the integrity of the skin. Certain injuries can cause extensive blood loss and in few cases, a piece of foreign material remains inside a punctured wound. These can get infected as the wound may get contaminated with bacteria and dirt. Wounds can be painful in the initial days but the pain reduces after the first day. If a cut or wound site bleeds profusely, then call 911 immediately for the emergency medical services.

Immediate Treatment
Minor cuts and wounds can be treated at home. They include:

  • Firstly, wash your hands with an antibacterial solution to prevent infection.
  • Wash the wound with mild soap and water.
  • If bleeding, apply direct pressure to stop bleeding.
  • Apply antibacterial ointment and a clean bandage that does not stick to the wound.
  • In the case of punctured wound, look for objects inside the wound and do not remove anything inside the wound.

Major Wound
Call for emergency medical assistance if the wound is a major one. Call 911 if:

  • If the bleeding is severe, spurting and does not stop.
  • There is impaired function from the cut.
  • The person is seriously injured.
  • If the wound is deep or large and may need stitches.
  • If an object or any foreign particle is embedded.
  • If a person is bitten by an animal or human.
  • If a cut is caused by a rusted fishhook or any other object.

Treatment in a Hospital
If you have a cot or wound that cannot be treated at home, then take the victim to a local emergency department. The health care professional cleans the wound and depending on the severity of the wound and bleeding, various procedures are done.They include:

  • Stitches: When the wound is more than 5cm long, then the wound is stitched by a doctor. Stitches are made from a sterile surgical thread that is flexible and absorbable. A local anesthesia is given to the area that needs to be sutured.
  • Tissue adhesive: These adhesive tapes may be used to close less severe cuts that are under 5cm long. This is a paste like thing which is applied over the cut which results in forming a layer that keeps the cut closed.
  • Skin closure strips: These may be used as an alternative to tissue adhesive, for cuts that are less than 5cm. These strips are adhesive as they are placed over the edges of the cut, to hold them together. They are easily removed when compared to the tissue adhesives. Once your cut or wound is closed, a doctor may place a sterile dressing. A dose of tetanus injection may be given to prevent the tetanus infection.
  • Skin grafts: If the wound is very severe and a person has lost lot of skin, then a doctor may advice for a skin graft. The surgeon may take skin from any part of the body and put it over the wound. After a few days, the skin looks normal and healthy.

Prevention
The main precaution to be taken is to prevent cuts and wounds by reducing the accidents or injuries. They include:

  • Keep all the sharp objects out of the reach of children.
  • Keep a first aid box which should be kept ready for any emergency.
  • Keep an eye on infants, specially when they start walking.
  • Keep an eye on the older people.
  • Keep your home safe by placing all the dangerous objects at a height.
  • Know how to use any equipment that you use properly.
  • Have good lighting so that you can see what you are doing.
  • The floor of your house should not be very slippery.
  • Wear gloves and other safety gear whenever possible like boots and glasses.
  • Hold a sharp object away from your body.
  • Teach children about safety and set a good example.
  • Have a tetanus shot every 10 years.

Home Remedies for Cuts and Wounds
Some of the simple home remedies include:

  • Apply lemon over the cut to stop the bleeding.
  • Apply powdered turmeric over the cut.
  • Application of the marjoram oil over the wound.
  • Tea bags can be applied on the cut to stop bleeding.
  • Apply some grind black coffee over the wound and bandage.
  • Include high amounts of garlic and onions in your diet.
  • Apply apple cedar vinegar and cold water on the wound.
  • Chamomile flower reduces swelling and prevents infection.
  • Apply garlic on the wound or cut as it speeds up the healing process.
  • Do not panic and remain calm.
