Metabolic Syndrome, Causes and Symptoms

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors that come together in an individual. The actual risk that is involved in metabolic syndrome is cardiovascular disease. The main characteristic feature of metabolic syndrome includes high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and insulin resistance which increases clotting.

Most patients suffering from metabolic syndrome are obese. In metabolic syndrome, the cells have an ability to react to the insulin that helps in transferring sugar glucose from blood to muscles and other tissues.

Causes of Metabolic Syndrome

Environment and genes play a very important role in the development of metabolic syndrome. Every individual is affected with components of genetic factors. An individual has high chances of developing metabolic syndrome if one of the family member is suffering from hypertension, type 2 diabetes or early heart disease.

Environment problems like inactive lifestyle, low level of activity and weight gain can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. Many people suffer from metabolic syndrome which includes 5% people with normal body weight, people with overweight are 22% and rest of the 60% are considered to be obese. People who have a chance to gain four pounds or more each year have 45% more chances of developing metabolic syndrome. Other than obesity, there are other factors that can cause metabolic syndrome:

  • Smoking
  • Post menopausal women
  • Diet that is high in carbohydrates
  • No activity
  • Diet that includes no intake of alcohol

Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

There are no prominent symptoms of metabolic syndrome but a large waistline can be a symptom. Some people can experience symptoms like high blood sugar, especially if the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes. For a person who has high blood sugar, symptoms can include increase urge to urinate, feeling thirsty especially at night, tiredness and blurred vision.
