Meningitis, Causes and Symptoms of Meningitis

Meningitis is caused when the membrane known as meninges that surrounds the brain and spinal cord gets inflammed. It is a type of viral which is very serious and need immediate attention. This infection can gradually spread to the brain tissue and damage the brain. Meningitis can occur to people at any age but this is especially observed in children who are 5 years and younger and adults between the age of 15 to 25 years.

What Causes Meningitis

Many viruses meningitis and bacteria meningitis can cause meningitis. Bacteria meningitis has serious consequences and affects many people around the world. One out of ten people are affected with bacteria meningitis and it one out of seven people survive this disease. It leaves the survivor disabled as the brain gets severely injured. Streptococcus pneumonia is the main cause of meningitis. Many people also suffer from ear infection every year.

What are the Symptoms of Meningitis
Meningitis has the following symptoms which include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Sensitive to light
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Severe headache
  • Fatigue and confusion

Viral meningitis may suddenly develop or may gradually develop over a period of time whereas bacterial meningitis suddenly develops in a person. Example- if a person is suffering from viral meningitis, the symptoms after mumps would take at-least seven days or a week to develop completely. In severe cases meningitis can lead to swelling in the brain followed by disability, coma and death. If you observe the above symptoms of meningitis, then you should go for an immediate checkup.
