Grades of Neck Pain

If you are a neck pain patient, do you know what grades of neck pain that you have? Knowing about the grade of your neck pain is compulsory as a part of creating the most suitable treatment for you.

Grades of Neck Pain
Grades of neck pain are divided into four.

Grade 1

  • There are no signs or symptoms of major pathology.
  • Little intervention with patient’s daily activities.
  • No need further investigation.
  • Reassurance about the possibility of significant underlying pathology is not likely.
  • Patient may take self-care (avoid immobilization of neck, stay active, simple medications/analgesics).
  • Rarely conservative therapy options.

Grade 2

  • There are no signs or symptoms of major pathology.
  • Interference with patient’s daily activities.
  • No need further investigation
  • Reassurance about the possibility of significant underlying pathology is not likely.
  • Evaluate for environmental aspects or personal aspects which might be relating to the clinical appearance.
  • Conservative therapy options to be considered.

Grade 3

  • Neck pain patient has neurological signs/symptoms (radiculopathy)
  • Patient does not need immediate investigation
  • Immediate investigation is suggested when major neurological deficit exists.
  • Manage symptomatically
  • Close monitoring is required to identify any development of neurology.
  • Investigation and referral for patient if development of neurological deficits, obstinate pain continues in spite of 4 to 6 weeks conventional treatment.

Grade 4

  • Neck pain patient has neurological signs/symptoms of main structural pathology.
  • Suspected underlying pathology will result on the referral or investigation decision.

Added Information
Majority of neck pain patients suffer from grade 1 or grade 2 pain. The mainstays of neck pain treatment would be encouragement to stay active in all aspects of patients’ lives and simple analgesics.
