Cervical Cancer – Causes and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer when the cells in the cervix change which leads to abnormal growth and invasion of other tissues and organs of the body. Cervix is a part of the uterus which is located at the lower side and enters into the vagina. This disease can be cured when this disease is diagnosed at an early stage. Most of the cervical cancer is caused by a virus called human papillomavirus which is a sexually transmitted disease. Cervical cancer occurs most often in women over the age of 30.

Causes of Cervical Cancer
The causes of cervical cancer include:

  • Human papillomavirus infection: This viral infection is one of the causes for this cancer because the virus works by triggering alterations in the cells of the cervix which leads to the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasa which results in cancer of the cervix.
  • Multiple sexual partners: If you have had sex with multiple partners, then greater the chance of acquiring this HPV infection.
  • Early sexual activity: Having a sexual experience before the age of 18 years, increases the risk of HPV.
  • Other sexually transmitted disease: If you suffer from other sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV or syphilis, the greater the risk having an HPV infection.
  • Weak immune system: If you suffer from HPV infection and if your immune system is weakened by any other condition, then you may be likely to develop this disease.
  • Cigarette Smoking: The use of tobacco can increases the risk of precancerous changes as well as cancer of the cervix. Smoking and HPV infection may work together to cause cervical cancer.

Symptoms
Early stages of cervical cancer do not show any signs and symptoms. As the cancer progresses, the following signs and symptoms may be seen. They include:

  • Watery and bloody discharges from the vagina that may be heavy and foul smelling
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods or after menopause
  • Pelvic pain

When to consult your doctor?
Consult a doctor, when you observe the above signs and symptoms. Remember early treatment can cure cancer but if immediate treatment is not taken, then it may worsen the condition.
