What is Restless Legs Syndrome – Treatment and Prevention

7 – 10 percent people in the North America and Europe suffer from Restless legs syndrome. Women are twice more at risk of this disease than men. Primary and secondary legs syndrome are two types of this disease. Though the cause of primary type is not known, usage of certain medicines and few health conditions generally cause the secondary type. This article tries to learn about the treatment and prevention of this neurological disorder.

Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome:

  • Since the reasons for primary type of this disease are not known, treatment is focused on relieving the symptoms.
  • To treat the secondary type of RLS, complications associated with medical conditions are targeted and brought under control.
  • Dopaminergics are the medicines prescribed by the doctors as their first choice to treat this disease.
  • Mild or intermittent symptoms can be treated with Benzodiazepines but with the side effect of causing daytime sleepiness.
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug ropinirole to treat moderate to severe RLS in the year 2005.
  • More severe symptoms are treated by class of medicines opioids such as codeine, propoxyphene, or oxycodone as they can cause relaxation and diminish pain. But risk of addiction, dizziness, nausea and vomiting are some of the side effects of these medicines.

Prevention of Restless Legs Syndrome:

  • Unfortunately, no one drug can provide relief from all the symptoms of this disease.
  • Moreover, use of these drugs vary in their efficacy from one individual to another.
  • The medicines should be changed periodically as they become ineffective after some time.
  • Correcting magnesium, folate and iron deficiencies, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, getting proper sleep, regular moderate exercise, taking a hot bath and massaging the legs are some of the preventive measures of this disease.
  • Developing awareness about the disease also goes a long way in preventing the disease and gaining support from the family members.
