Bird Flu – Treatment, Prevention and Home Remedies for Bird Flu

Bird Flu is caused mainly by the influenza virus that very rarely infects the humans but if it infects mankind, its often deadly. More than half the people who become infected with bird flu, die of the disease. The virus spreads from the infected birds as their saliva , nasal secretions and droppings are infected with this virus. Humans get bird flu when they consume the uncooked meat of the infected bird and their droppings.

The only treatment for people suffering from this disorder is antiviral drugs and symptomatic treatment. They include:

Medical Treatment:

  • Isolate a person suffering from bird flu at home or in a hospital.
  • The drug of choice for bird flu, a doctor may prescribe is antivirals.
  • These drugs may be taken within two days after the appearance of the symptoms.
  • Medications for fever can be given in case of high fevers.
  • Pain killers can be given to reduce the pain in the joints.
  • Cough suppressants are administered to suppress cough.
  • Antihistamines and decongestants may be given to reduce running nose and relieve from nasal congestion.
  • Steam inhalations may be useful in opening up a blocked nose.
  • In some cases, where a patient is critical with severe breathing difficulty, oxygen inhalation can be given along with critical care.

Prevention of Bird flu
Some of the ways to prevent this disease include:

  • Bird flu vaccine: The Food and Drug Administration has approved one vaccine to prevent this infection but the U.S. Government is stockpiling it and these drugs will be distributed if there is an outbreak of this disease.
  • Avoid domesticated birds: If it is possible, avoid rural areas, small farms and open-air markets when there is an outbreak of this disease.
  • Hand washing: Use alcohol based hand sanitizers, that contains 60% of alcohol is the simplest and the best way to fight all kinds of infections. They are easy to use, effective, don’t require water and is safe for children.
  • Flu shot: Before you travel, ask your doctor about a flu shot as this may help you reduce the risk of simultaneous infection with bird and human flu viruses.
  • Avoid cross-contamination: Wash the utensils and cutting boards with hot and soapy water that have come in contact with raw meat and other poultry.
  • Cook thoroughly: Cook chicken till the juices become clear and the minimum internal temperature of 165 F.
  • Avoid raw eggs: Eggshells are usually contaminated with bird droppings, hence avoid mayonnaise, ice cream and any other foods containing raw or undercooked foods.

Home Remedies for Bird flu
Some of the natural remedies include:

  • Green tea: This is a good antiviral agent so drink 3 -6 cups of green tea daily.
  • Eucalyptus: Add 2 drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of steaming water and inhale the vapors by covering your head with a towel. This will relieve the congestion and fight infections.
  • Vitamin-C: This boosts the immune system and is an excellent antiviral agent.
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables: Eat brightly colored vegetables and fruits like carrots, oranges, apples, chilly peppers, blue and cranberries. Garlic, onion and horse radish can be consumed.These can lower the susceptibility to bird flu infections.
  • Honey gargles: Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 2 cups of hot water, then mix 1 teaspoon of honey and let the mixture cool before gargle.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mucus membrane well-hydrated.
  • Stay warm and take plenty of sleep.
  • Quit smoking and avoid smoke filled rooms.
  • Cough and sneeze into a soft tissue or handkerchief and after use dispose the tissues carefully.
  • Stay at home if you are infected and avoid going to crowded places.
  • Exercise helps to boost your immunity, so do simple exercises, yoga or meditation.
