What is Rosacea – Causes and Symptoms

Rosacea is a chronic, cosmetic condition affecting the age group of 30-60 years. It is three times more common in women and usually involves redness and pimples on the face. This article tries to gains further insight on the causes and symptoms this skin disease.

Causes of Rosacea:

In a research study it was found that 47 percent of patients suffering from this disease, have small intestinal bacteria growth. Increased number of mites can also cause this disease. Foods high in histamine, beverages containing alcohol and caffeine, sun burn, stress, cold wind and certain steroids and medications act as triggers of this skin condition. Excess intake of carbohydrate diet can also be one of the causes of rosacea. According to a survey carried out by the National Rosacea Society on 1,066 rosacea patients, the following factors play a vital role in spreading this infection:

Symptoms of Rosacea:

  • Skin redness
  • Skin pimples

  • Small broken blood vessels of face
  • Thickened nasal skin
  • Bumpy nose
  • Enlarged nose
  • Bulbous red nose
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Blurry vision
  • Impaired vision in severe cases

Depending on the stages of the infection, it can be further classified into three types, as early, vascular and inflammatory. The following are the symptoms of these types of rosacea:

Symptoms of Prerosacea:

  • Neck redness
  • Episodic redness
  • Flushing
  • Face redness

Symptoms of Vascular Rosacea:

  • Warm skin
  • Persistent redness
  • Persistent flushing
  • Telangiectasia
  • Swollen skin

Symptoms of Inflammatory Rosacea:

  • Pimples
  • Thin red lines on face
  • Papules or pink bumps
